My parents told me I had to choose one thing: college or bike racing. I chose bike racing.

I love racing. It’s definitely better than any alternative. I like the travel, like making new friends. I like being able to yell at Grant during the day and then have a beer with him at night with no hard feelings.

I also like the unpredictability of cycling. It’s like in football when a coach calls a play, and the entire time the quarterback is reading the defense and then he changes the play at the last minute. Cycling is the same. We can have a plan at the beginning, but when it’s in play, we may have to change the play altogether.

This year, as someone new to the team, I think I need to prove my value. I realize I’ve been given a great opportunity, and I want to be on this team as long as possible.

I’m a big believer in karma. If I crash my bike, my immediate thought is, “What did I do to deserve this?” Good things happen to good people.
